For years, Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) had to clear the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) to get their license to practice medicine in India. However, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is transitioning to the National Exit Test (NExT). Here is what every FMG needs to know about this shift.
Key Differences Between FMGE and NExT
1. Structure and Format
FMGE is a single-day, two-part licensing exam testing factual knowledge. NExT will be split into two separate phases: NExT-1 (a multiple-choice computer-based test testing clinical decision-making) and NExT-2 (a practical and clinical examination assessing hands-on skills).
2. Unified Application
FMGE serves only as a licensing exam. NExT, on the other hand, will serve as a licensing exam, a final MBBS graduation exam for domestic students, and the PG entrance exam (replacing NEET PG) for both Indian and foreign medical graduates.
3. Clinical Integration
NExT questions focus heavily on clinical problem-solving rather than simple memorization. Students must start clinical training and case studies early in their MBBS program to crack NExT.
